Frequently Asked Questions
A Home Sewage Treatment Plant (HSTP) is essentially a miniaturized version of a Municipal Sewage Treatment Works, specifically designed for residential use in your own backyard. It employs the same well-established treatment techniques as larger municipal systems to process all of your household’s wastewater, including that from toilets, showers, baths, and washing machines. The HSTP efficiently treats and purifies this wastewater to such a high standard that the resulting water can be safely reused for lawn irrigation. Many homeowners may not even realize they have their own HSTP, as these systems are low-maintenance (for instance, Taylex systems only require quarterly servicing) and function much like a standard connection to a municipal sewer, with the added benefit of water reuse.
Absolutely!
As a mandatory requirement of their State Accreditation Approval, all Taylex Wastewater treatment systems must undergo quarterly servicing, and this service must be carried out exclusively by licensed wastewater service professionals.
Only registered and licensed wastewater service professionals can perform maintenance on wastewater treatment systems, in accordance with Australian and state laws. Nevertheless, there are compelling reasons to have your system regularly maintained beyond fulfilling council requirements.
Regular maintenance ensures that your Taylex system consistently operates at its peak efficiency, delivering high-quality water for reuse in your yard and garden. Furthermore, if you opt for maintenance by an accredited Taylex service agent, you will benefit from an extended warranty on all electrical components, providing complete peace of mind for the continued well-being of your system. To facilitate the effective execution of their duties, always maintain clear access to and around your system, keep the grass mowed and neat, and ensure the top of your system remains clear and free from obstacles. If safe access to your system is not provided, your service technician may need to reschedule until the issues are resolved.
No!
Free, unrestricted access must be always provided to all access points on the top of the system. This is because we need to comply with Occupational Work Health and Safety Requirements in providing a Safe Workplace for our service technicians.
No!
Just as you wouldn’t switch off the aerator in a goldfish bowl or power down your refrigerator or freezer while on holiday, you should refrain from turning off the power to your Secondary Wastewater Treatment System. The bacteria naturally self-regulate their numbers, so when there’s no more organic matter coming from your home, they will gradually diminish, controlled by the remaining available food.
These bacteria will still have access to oxygen, and a small number will remain viable, swiftly multiplying when fresh wastewater is reintroduced upon your return. If you deactivate the system, all the bacteria will begin dying within 8 hours, depleting all the available dissolved oxygen and shifting the plant into an anaerobic state, which will eliminate all aerobic bacteria. Restarting the system and reestablishing a healthy microbial community can be very challenging, resulting in a foul odor that persists for an extended period. In some cases, you may even need to pump the system out and start it anew.
Taylex Wastewater Treatment Systems harness the power of naturally occurring “Aerobic” bacteria to process your home’s wastewater. Therefore, using harsh chemicals and strong antibacterial agents in large quantities can harm and even kill these beneficial Aerobic bacteria. Taylex suggests opting for products that possess some of the following attributes:
“Septic Safe”
Biodegradable
Free from bleach, chlorine, or potent antibacterial agents
Taylex systems are intentionally designed to handle small amounts of potentially harmful substances, but it’s important to exercise moderation with anything that enters your drains.
